Whatever you ask for in My name

If you ask for a chance to be challenged in your faith, for the ability to grow, and to know, for certain, that you are a true believer in Christ, be prepared. Your eyes will be opened to the opportunities that come upon you every day.

This makes me wonder about all of the other opportunities that I have blindly missed to be an alien to this world, and instead fell right in line with the world's vain philosophies, which are passing away (did you hear that, they ARE PRESENTLY passing away).

While at the office of a colleague today, I couldn't help but notice something which was so obvious, but nonetheless something that had escaped my attention in other prior visits to his office.

He is a licensed professional and is considered by many to be immensely successful in a field where relatively few attain long term prosperity; he owns a large office at the intersection of two busy streets at a prominent downtown location and the parking lot is full of vehicles bearing the name of his firm. He lives in a very large house in an exclusive neighborhood on the outskirts of the city. The modern picture of success indeed...

While sitting in his office, I was overwhelmed by all the framed pictures taken after he had caught a large fish or shot a trophy animal. Mounted on the walls were numerous racks of deer, moose, antelope and a couple of rare african animals. Expensive fine art of the same animals adorned all of the walls of his office and prominently displayed on the cradenza behind his desk was a beautiful painting of an majestic elk.

Several hours after I left his office it suddenly occured to me that he had invested thousands of hours over the last 30 years in the pursuit of acquiring all of the pictures, trophy racks & mounts, and fine art from his many hunting and fishing trips.

I wondered what kind of person he would be like if he had spent an equal amount of time in pursuit of his christian education and development. The impact he could have had on others.

I saw the same imbalance in my life that I saw in his office. It's time to take down some of the stuff on the walls of my office and get some balance in my life.
